Restoring Hampi landscape wins him international award
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Bangalore: A historian, a wildlife expert, a town planning expert — these are just a few added facets of city-based landscape architect Mohan S Rao. This multi-talented man is the first Indian to be bestowed with the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Award — Asia Pacific Region. Mohan received the award in China, in May.
The IFLA president’s award was given to Integrated Design, a Bangalore-based firm headed by Mohan. Among 14 member countries, including Australia, China and New Zealand, it’s the only Indian firm to feature in this year’s IFLA honour list.
Mohan was awarded for the work carried out by Integrated Design (INDE) over the past six years in landscape restoration and interpretation of the world heritage site of Hampi. In IFLA’s 62-year history, it’s also the first time that an Indian firm has been honoured with the president’s award.
“INDE, in association with Archeological Survey of India (ASI), has been actively involved in understanding and restoring ancient landscape systems. This includes revival of a Pushkarini through complete natural means,” Mohan told TOI.
At the World Expo 2010 at Shanghai, four Indian architects, including Mohan, exhibited India Pavilion through a 36-metre dome, made out of natural bamboo. “The dome has solar panels and wind mills which take care of the energy requirements of the whole pavilion. We have grown herbs, shrubs, medicinal plants atop the dome through soil-less cultivation, but by supplying nutrients to the plants. The Government of India spent about Rs 30 crore for the Indian Pavilion,” said Mohan.
‘ENRICH GROUND WATER TABLE’
According to Mohan, city’s civic agencies need to work in a planned manner. “Beautification of lakes won’t help enrich water resources in the city. Constructing walking track around Ulsoor lake can’t be termed as development work, instead desilt the linking Nagawara lake and enrich the ground water table,” says Mohan.
